iNaturalist automatically obscures the location of species that are set to "Obscured Geoprivacy" in the Conservation Status for the species. This setting can be changed by curators and can be applied to specific jurisdictions. In the early years of iNaturalist, this setting was automatically applied to all taxa G1-G3 as a cautionary measure, but individual programs have made changes based on threats to species.
When files are downloaded for iNaturalist using the default download settings, the file can include both actual and obscured coordinates. You may have access to the obscured coordinates of others if they have trusted you or a project you administer with those coordinates. Or the observer can download their own observations and email them to you.
When any iNaturalist file is uploaded, obscured coordinates can be excluded by setting the spatial uncertainty to 20,000 or less. If there are coordinates in the private_latitude and private_longitude fields, RARECAT will display a point at those coordinates instead of the obscured coordinates.
We are working on making RARECAT better at recognizing non-standard iNaturalist downloads but for now, use the default set of fields to ensure that it can read them correctly.
