In this topic, we can talk about desired fields and output for the rank calculator that can be downloaded from RARECAT. All ideas will be included in the main message, and then individual ideas will be copied into comments. Users should like features they want implemented, and features with the most votes can be prioritized during RARECAT development periods.

We propose to have two tabs in the rank calculator export file: one with rank calculator data, and one with results, parameters, and other data outlined in task 1.

Tasks to consider for implementation (in progress):

Task 1 @Amanda Eberly @Giovanni Rapacciuolo Mock-up available RARECAT-multispecies_run-rank_factor_values-2025-03-03.csv  included a mockup for the single species mode also (but not sure what the temporal analysis fields should look like when there are three time periods). The output rank calculator for either mode would be an excel file with two tabs, one for the rank calc and one with the date analysis summary. All fields documented except “TBD standardized text for each factor, not appended to existing factor text”, as this doesn’t feel worked out yet.
@Giovanni Rapacciuolo When uploading rank calculator, bypass NatureServe Explorer API in the rank calculator download (the RARECAT rank calculator export fields only, see file attached to this ticket).
(requirements in progress) Standardized text developed from ranking parameters.

Previous notes/questions supporting the tasks:

-How to incorporate standardized text in summary export? AE: two ways, appended to existing factor text and as standalone statement in tab 2.

Example 1 (simple): Range extent was estimated to be [use calculated value] square kilometers using specimen and photo-based observations documented between 1994 and 2025 (GBIF 2025, iNaturalist 2025,  RARECAT 2024, ***add citation(s) for uploaded data here***).

Range extent was estimated to be [use calculated value] square kilometers using specimen and photo-based observations documented between 1994 and 2025 (, GBIF 2025, iNaturalist 2025, RARECAT 2025 ***add citation(s) for uploaded data here***).

Example 2 (complex option integrating trend calcs): Range extent was estimated to be [use calculated value] square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1994 and 2025 and estimated to be XXXX when historical data are included (RARECAT 2024, GBIF 2025, iNaturalist 2025,  ***add citation(s) for uploaded data here***).

-How do we want to interact with existing text from imported calculators or text to be exported to a calculator? AE: append after existing text.

-Do we want to add a new row for each assessment with the date? We do not want to overwrite previous calculator text. AE: Yes, add a new row.

Considerations to include in tabular output file as a new tab in excel workbook:

-Taxonomic concepts used (including GBIF IDs, see RARECAT-15)

-Date range of observation data assessed (e.g., 1994 to 2025).

-Locational uncertainty cutoff.

-Geographic filters (nation and/or subnations).

-Exact number for calculated rarity factors.
